Nicole D. Soehner was born and raised in Kitchener, and is proud to call Waterloo Region her home. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Waterloo, with Honours in Legal Studies and Sociology and a Specialization in Criminology. Nicole continued her studies at the University of Western Ontario, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree. While completing law school, she took as many criminal law related courses as possible including courses focused on wrongful convictions, evidence and custodial facilities. While at Western, Nicole sought opportunities to engage with clients and the courts. She contributed her time to the local Community Legal Services clinic, as well as a Legal Aid Ontario clinic, and the Family Law Program. In her final year of law school, Nicole completed a clerkship with the Judges of the Ontario Court of Justice in London Ontario. This experience provided her with insight into the thought processes of judges early in her career.
Nicole has learned under experienced counsel in Kitchener. She summered with Brennan Smart and completed her articles with Terry MacKean. Her articling experience focused entirely on criminal law and she gained extensive experience in the practice of criminal defence. During this time, Nicole contributed work to numerous bail hearing, guilty pleas and trials. She also built invaluable relationships with local crown attorneys and other court officials. It is Nicole's view that maintaining these professional relationships is an essential element of effectively representing her clients.
During her personal time, Nicole enjoys spending time with her husband Ben and her dog, Gemma. Nicole counts ultimate frisbee, cookie decorating and cheering on the Kitchener Rangers amongst her varied hobbies. She is happiest anywhere that she can hang up her hammock and enjoy a good book.
